We use it to designate a not unique thing.
Un pont → a bridge
Une femme → a woman
Des rues → streets
We use it to designate a quantity
Un homme → a man
Une femme → a woman
Un is a masculine-singular article
Une is a feminine-singular article
Des is a plural article, it could be masculine or feminine
The definite articles : le, la, les
We use it to designate a unique thing.
Le Pont-Neuf → the Pont-Neuf
La femme de Paul → The wife of Paul
Les rues de Paris → The streets of Paris
We use it to designate a generality
L’homme (= les hommes) → men
La femme (= les femmes) → women
La musique, le sport, le cinéma
Le is a masculine-singular article

Depuis
We use depuis for a duration that continues.
Depuis + the present tense
Je suis professeur depuis 1995 → I have been a professor since 1995
Je travaille depuis huit heures → I have been working for eight hours
We say Je travaille depuis 2 heures, we do not say Je travaille pour 2 heures
Pendant
We use pendant for a limited duration.
Pendant + the past tense (le passé composé)
J’ai été secrétaire pendant 6 jours → I was a secretary for 6 days
J’ai dormi pendant 4 heures → I slept for 4 hours
We say J’ai dormi pendant 2 heures, we do not say J’ai dormi pour 2 heures.
Il y a
We use il y a to designate a moment in the past.
J’ai passé le bac il y a trois ans → I passed the bachelor three years ago
Je suis arrivé il y a dix jours → I arrived 10 days ago
Dans
We use dans to designate a moment in the future.
Je passerai l’examen dans 6 mois → I will do the ex am in 6 months
Je partirai dans trois semaines → I will leave in three weeks
