Hi, English speakers who want to Learn French 🙂 !
In this article I share how using the words Matin/Matinée – Soir/Soirée – Jour/Journée.
When the word ends with -ée he is feminine, the others are masculine :
Le matin / la matinée → morning
Le soir / la soirée → evening
Le jour / la journée → day
Matin = until noon
Après-midi = until 5 pm / 6 pm
Soir = from 6 pm to midnight
The logic
Matin, soir, jour = one moment
Matinée, soirée, journée = a length
Matin/Matinée – Soir/Soirée – Jour/Journée
Matin → morning
Le matin, je fais toujours un peu de sport. → In the morning, I always do a little sport.
En général, je travaille le matin et l’après-midi je m’occupe des enfants. → In general, I work in the morning and in the afternoon I take care of children.
Le matin / Tous les matins, il fait un footing. → Morning / Every morning, he jogs.
Matinée
- With the adverb tout(e) : J’ai travaillé toute la matinée. → I worked all morning.
- We can also say : J’irai voir Paul dans la matinée. → I'll go see Paul in the morning.
Matin/Matinée – Soir/Soirée – Jour/Journée
Soir → evening
Je préfère faire du sport le soir. → I prefer to play sports at night.
Le soir, je lis le journal. ( = every night) → In the evening, I read the newspaper.
Marie passera ce soir. → Marie will be spending tonight.
Soirée
Marie va passer dans la soirée, entre 7 heures et 9 heures. → Marie will spend the evening, between 7 and 9 o'clock.
Il a passé toute la soirée devant la télé ! → He spent the whole evening watching TV!
C’est une magnifique soirée ! (to qualify, we generally prefer to use matinée, soirée, journée) → It's a wonderful evening!

Jour → day
- To situate yourself in time :
Il y a 3 jours…, ça fait 2 jours que…, dans 8 jours… → 3 days ago ..., it's been 2 days that ..., in 8 days ...
C’est le plus beau jour de ma vie ! → It's the most beautiful day of my life !
Un nouveau jour se lève ! → A new day is coming up!
- For the frequency :
3 jours par semaine… → 3 days a week ...
- Avec TOUS LES : Il arrose les plantes tous les jours. → He watered the plants every day.
- For the calendar :
Le 3e jour de l’année c’est le 3 janvier. → The third day of the year is January 3rd.
Le jour de l’an ! → New Year's Day!
Journée
Je t’ai attendu toute la journée. (whole day) → I waited for you all day.
C’est une belle journée. (with adjectives) → It's a beautiful day
Ma journée de travail est de 10 heures ! → My workday is 10 hours !
La journée de la femme. → Women's day.
We can say the both of them : Le dernier jour de l’été / la dernière journée de l’été.
